Game Time!

The Roster is officially set. Practice has been going on for a bit and plays and schemes are being put in place. On October 28th, Midnight Madness was a success as seen in the video. There is certainly a hype for the upcoming season. The team is looking forward to the season and the home opener on November 15th against Schreiner. The hard offseason work and sweat will pay off with a hopeful victory. In between now and then there are a few scrimmages on Saturday the 6th on TLU and HPU on Tuesday the 9th.
Looking forward past the first game we get to the week of Thanksgiving. The team is traveling to Washington and then to California. The trip will be for eight days and three days of school will be missed! A good start to the season is key to get a good rhythm for what will be a long, exhausting schedule. Practices have been from two to three hours, but once games actually begin, they will be more around an hour and a half. It'll be interesting to see how we do since we've only played against each other so far. Nevertheless, the season is starting and everyone is excited about the tip off of the 2010-2011 basketball season!

Go Time!

A little over twenty days away from the official home opener on November 13th! Basketball season is officially here. The team has been picked, and the players are ready to go. This year, unlike the past couple of years, there will be Midnight Madness to celebrate the kick off of both the Men's and Women's basketball teams on October 28th at 10 pm until midnight. Normally, Midnight Madness is on the first night NCAA basketball teams are allowed to practice, October 15th, but Trinity is making it two weeks later as a Halloween event as well. Students are supposed to come dressed in costumes as there will be a costume contest along with other events.

Some events that are going to happen at Midnight Madness this year will be a dunk contest, performances from Trinity's Loon-E-crew and cheerleading squad, and music. There will even be a student vs. faculty game, which anyone can participate in, and even a dance routine from both Men's and Women's basketball teams. This light hearted, fun night will be all about the fans and getting them into the season to support both squads as they get ready for November 13th to come around.

King of the Court is a competition held at the beginning of the season to see where a player is at physically, in non basketball competitions. There are five competitions and points are awarded for best test and greatest percentage increase from the prior semester as the coaches administer these tests. The person who gets the best score for a test will receive ten points and the person with the highest percentage increase will get ten points. For example, If a player finishes first place for a test, and gets the second highest percentage increase for the test, then he receives ten points and nine points, 19 points total for that test. Also no points are given to a player who places lower than 10th place.
The five tests test a players strength, speed, conditioin, jumping ability, and agility. The first test is the vertical jump. One will measure their standing reach and then they will measure how high they can touch when jumping and subtract the one from the other to get one's vertical score. The second test is lane agility, testing one's agility around the lane line. The picture above demonstrates the shuffle pattern. The third test is a sprint the length of the basketball court. The fourth test is bench press. A player will complete as many repetitions of 135lbs. as many times as they can. The last test is conditioning. This consists of a player running 17 reps across the width of the court and is timed, and must do this three times. The average of the 3 times will be recorded.
Who will be King of the Court this year?

Weight Room

In order to get better as a basketball player, or as an overall athlete, one must make a commitment to the weight room. Getting stronger is a key component to the transition to college athletics. In the Bell Athletic Center, there are two designated workout areas. One of these areas is on the second floor and mostly consists of cardiovascular machines such as the treadmills. On the bottom floor is the weight room that the athletes use to lift weights. Both facilities are accessible with one's tiger card and are open to all Trinity students.

Workouts for basketball players is on your own at this point. One must go lift and be in condition on October 15. I've been playing almost everyday, and trying to life every other day. When I have days in which I have open gym and also go lift, that is a three to four hours of my day. Time management becomes crucial to get all my academic work done while keeping up with the offseason schedule. Luckily, the weight room is open from eleven in the morning to ten at night for the out of season athlete. With October 15 creeping up in less than a month, it is important to get good workouts in the offseason to be in the best condition when the season rolls around.

Open Gym

Players only open gym has started. After a team meeting on August 25, every player was put on a texting list to get times of open gym from the senior players. Playing everyday in the Bell athletic center, we play five on five to get some conditioning in while touching up on our skills from the summer. The seniors will pick teams and there will be a winner’s court and a loser’s court. The objective is to win and stay on the winner’s court. Roughly about twenty to twenty-five guys are trying out this year.

As a freshman it is vital to work hard and prepare yourself for these five on five scrimmages. Conditioning is a key part of the preseason, especially for freshman as we are making the transition to a longer sized basketball court used at the college level. Tryouts and hands on coaching do not begin until mid October, so it is in the athlete’s best interest to get prepared for then by playing everyday. The five on five scrimmaging lasts about two hours. After playing, most of the players stick around to shoot some extra shots. The season is only a little over a month away!
